Finding the Right Words
Over the years, as a dog training professional, I have come to learn that each language has it’s own nuances to how and when certain words are used for commands, and the interpretation of that word or phrase is often translated wrong by Google, or other popular translation tools.
For example, if you speak Dutch and wanted your dog to search for a person, would you say ‘Zoekopdracht’? According to Google you would, or you could say “doorzoeken”, “onderzoeken”, or “Kijk”… Which word or use of the word do people use that speak fluent Dutch or are native to countries that speak the language? If you want to know or train your dog with the correct words/phrases, you have come to the right place.

How do these commands or translations vary from Google translate, or any other translation tool?
Dog commands are not the same as a one-word answer in a language. To heel next to handler is the word “heel” which is different from “heal” which is part of the ankle.
Some other examples of this are:
- Lie down could be “down”, or “rest”,
- To bark on command could be “bark”, or “speak”, or in protection sport “guard”.
- To drop an item could be “drop”, or “out”, or “release”, or “leave-it”
Further, the context of how/when these words or commands are used will vary from country to country, the dog sport or venue, and from one language to another. Our goal is to compile a database of words or phrases that are used as commands in the world of dog training.
